Curse you Arm Control Nerves!

I know it’s been some time since I’ve posted, but I do have a reason for it.  After a bit of a marathon knitting day and a whole lot of typing at my new job, my carpal tunnel has decided to act up again.  This means that in addition to constant pain in my wrists, I get the unmitigated joy of feeling the occasional electric shock shoot down my arm and leave my fingers with a lovely tingly numb feeling. As usual when this happens, even picking up a frying pan to cook my dinner becomes an ordeal. But enough whining from me, I have been managing to keep myself busy regardless. And so I give you one of my latest projects: The Orange What’s His Name

Deep down inside, I am still that 5 year old child who wants everything she sees on TV. So when I saw Alton Brown show us how to make a rip off of an Orange Julius, I marched myself halfway across the city and over the river to Haymarket and got me a whole bunch of cheap oranges. Due to a lack of the right equipment, The Boy and I were left to squeeze our oranges by hand, but our reward was so cool and frothy that you will get little argument from me.

Rather than watching the Good Eats episode again, The Boy found me another clone recipe online. this one called for an awful lot of sugar, so I made some adjustments. My only advice is to go easy on the vanilla. I used a very strong vanilla and it almost overpowered the rest of the drink.

My Recipe for an Orange What’s His Name

6-8oz fresh squeezed orange juice (I think I squeezed 2 oranges)
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup water
2 tbs sugar (I used rounded, but this is more of a matter of taste)
1/2 tsp vanilla
5-6 ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in blender until nice and smooth.

Mind you, this recipe is pretty flexible. I wanted something like an Orange Julius but a bit stronger on the orange and less sweet. I’m pretty happy with the results and hope to make it more often in the summer. Now if only I could find that juicing attachment for my food processor…

Yummy! I love citrus anything. Also, what kind of plants are those on your windowsill?

If you’re looking for more of an authentic Orange Julius flavor try this:

1 half can of Tropicana Orange Tangerine Juice (makes all the difference, and is why you need less sugar)
Half a Coconut soymilk drink box (I don’t rememmber the brand but it’s a red and white package and comes in a six pack you can get it at Super 88)
    1/4 cup of water
    1 tbls sugar
    one handful of ice
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla exctract (the fake stuff messes up the taste)
