The Red Balloon
Remember that French short film about a boy who befriends a balloon? Well basically the balloon follows the kid around all day , until he and the boy run into a group of bullies. The bullies send the red balloon to his make,r and in order to make the boy feel better about the brutal murder of his helium-filled friend, the rest of the balloons in the city swarm the boy and take him on a magical ride. My grade school had this film on VHS or something, and every time we had indoor recess due to the rain, they would try to make us watch it. I remember staring at the brown and blue tiles on the floor of the “multi-purpose room” (the same room was used for the gym, cafeteria, and auditorium) and debating if slamming my head against them would be enough to get me a trip to the nurse’s room. Sure I would run the risk of brain damage, but at least I wouldn’t have to watch that film again. Not to mention, since hat room was used as a gym, I’d already survived quite a few head traumas against those tiles, so what’s a few more damaged cells in the grand scheme of things anyway?
Happily for my parents and future friends, I never had the guts to do anything about it. But when I made this bento last night, it all came flashing back to me. Though I am grateful for that adorable little pick that transforms everyday cherry and grape tomatoes into a floaty orb of wonder (*smirk), it reminded me of that damn movie! I put a face on the thing hoping that I could make some other cute character, but it just wouldn’t work. And no, I wasn’t clever enough to realize that I could have just nicked the balloon and made a flower out of the tomato instead. Poo. I hate when that happens.
So that is what the cat pick is for. I had no intention of eating with it. Instead, the kitty waits and waits…for his balloon friend to arrive….so it can give the stupid thing one good swipe and end it all. Poor little guy, he has no idea what I’ve set him up for. Mwa ha ha ha!
**As always, click on the pic if you want more details on the contents of the bento.
